16 May 2018 will be the first time that the International Day of Living Together in Peace has been celebrated, having only been officially recognised by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 2017.

The celebration of this day expresses the DESIRE FOR PEACE of persons of all religions, as well as non-believers. It is a step to see our world change. Living together in peace is all about accepting differences and having the ability to listen, to recognize, to respect and to appreciate others, as well as living in a peaceful and united way. With a new vision, we can collectively generate and convey a profound change to build the society of tomorrow and propose a tool to express, loud and clear, this will to learn better living and doing together. The more numerous we are to choose « living better together », the more our commitment will change the world.

The International Day of Living Together in Peace is a means of mobilizing the efforts of the international community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity. The Day aims to uphold the desire to live and act together, united in differences and diversity, in order to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony.

This Day is an invitation to States and leaders of all sides to continue to further promote reconciliation, to help to ensure peace and sustainable development, especially collaborating with religious communities, faith leaders, and other relevant actors, through reconciliatory measures and acts of service and by encouraging forgiveness and compassion among individuals and communities.

The celebration of this International Day of Living Together in Peace, in the respect for cultures and others is an opportunity to take educational initiatives and carry out awareness-raising activities, through the organization of events, but especially through an on-going formation to learn to live together in real life.

The purpose of this day is to promote peace through a harmonious living together regardless of nationality, gender, language or religion. It is also an appeal to all governments and all States to promote reconciliation and ensure peace and sustainable development.

A global day of living together does not solve everything, but it is a useful and important step to know and recognize that we are in the circle of human fraternity, in synergy with each other and not in opposition to each other.

« Neither you nor I know how long we still have yet to live on this beautiful land, an oasis of life, a tiny ship in an infinite space. We do not know if we will ever see this project happen. But we entrust it to all as a seed of hope to convey and germinate in the minds of human beings. « Sheikh Khaled Bentounes »
